The Attributes of God

What they are. Why they matter. And what they mean for you and me.

According to Merriam-Webster, an attribute is "a quality, character, or characteristic ascribed to someone or something." You might describe someone as having brown hair, or a great sense of humor, or being easy to talk to — all of those are attributes.

God is a Person. As a person, He has attributes too. His attributes don't describe His physical appearance — instead, they tell us about His character, and knowing His character helps us relate to Him better.

God's attributes fall into two broad categories: incommunicable — qualities possessed by God alone — and communicable — qualities we share with God, though only He possesses them perfectly.
